Teachers Data Protection Day

Data Protection Day

Data Protection Day 2012 – teach about online privacy issues via our virtual activities.

Over the last three years The i in online has delivered training on Data Protection Day each January, to over 10,000 school children and their teachers across the UK and Ireland. The training aims to raise awareness about privacy rights and to provide a better understanding of data protection and how to protect personal information online.

The aim is for teachers or parents to deliver our training and education solutions to their students/children, preferably on 27 January 2012, or during the week commencing 23 January 2012. Using the simple step-by-step guide to deliver a one-hour session to young people, it should be an exciting and educational session.

Data Protection Day – 27 January 2012
To enable us to reach a much wider audience of students from primary and secondary schools as well as parents and teachers from the UK, Ireland, Canada and the US, we have created a dedicated micro site to support and deliver our training for Data Protection Day.

This is completely FREE for all parents and teachers.

The aim is for teachers or parents to deliver our training and education solutions to their students/children, preferably on 27 January 2012, or during the week commencing 23 January 2012. Using the simple step-by-step guide to deliver a one-hour session to young people, it should be an exciting and educational session.

What will the session include?

Step 1
A presentation in the form of a video. This will be a combination of interviews with Data Protection experts speaking on key issues and new videos designed and acted out by secondary school children in the UK, and filmed by professionals from the BBC. Each of these videos lasts for about 4 minutes.
Section lasts approximately 30 minutes

Step 2
A workshop looking at privacy online and how iconography can educate young people. In 2011 we collected thousands of children’s drawings, cartoons and icons that depict key principles of privacy which enabled us to design the Child Online Privacy Code. A few key drawings have been selected and we want young people’s views on whether these particular icons deliver an understandable message.
Section lasts approximately 15 minutes

Step 3
An online survey as conducted in previous years, which covers topics such as the number of children using Social Networking Sites and/or avatars, views around privacy policies and legal input to these, use of photos online and age of consent.
Section lasts approximately 15 minutes
