iKeepSafe launches new privacy resources for Data Protection Day 2012
Over 40 countries around the world are celebrating Data Protection Day on 28 January 2012 to raise awareness about the many ways personal information is collected, stored, used, and shared. Their goal is to enable individuals to protect their personal information. The Internet Keep Safe Coalition (iKeepSafe), established in 2005, is a non-profit international alliance of more than 100 policy leaders, educators, law enforcement members, technology experts, public health experts and advocates which tracks global trends and issues surrounding digitally connected products and their effect on children.
iKeepSafe has over 100 partners, including Google and Facebook, dedicated to leading today’s youth toward achieving full digital citizenship.
To celebrate Data Protection Day, or Data Privacy Day as it is known in the United States, iKeepSafe is launching a new website to promote awareness of data protection issues and provide guidance on how to protect personal information online.
The site, http://ikeepsafe.org/2012privacy, will offer free resources to parents, children and educators to help them understand and tackle the threats to children’s privacy online.
Amongst the resources available are guidelines to help parents and educators teach children about protecting their personal data online as well as resources aimed at the children themselves. These resources include guidance on steps to take to use mobile devices securely, and the additional considerations to be taken into account when these devices are used by children.
iKeepSafe has also produced an infographic which is available on the website highlighting some of the major data protection breaches and successes of the last year as well as a calendar for 2012 highlighting other important data protection dates for the year ahead.
